Why is giving considered one of the highest expressions of human existence?
It can only be considered one of the highest expressions of human existence if it is done in the mode of goodness, according to shastra.
Sri Krishna explains about giving in charity in Bhagavad Gita.
Bg 17.20 - Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness.
Bg 17.21 - But charity performed with the expectation of some return, or with a desire for fruitive results, or in a grudging mood, is said to be charity in the mode of passion.
Bg 17.22 - And charity performed at an impure place, at an improper time, to unworthy persons, or without proper attention and respect is said to be in the mode of ignorance.
It’s also unavoidable to give service because we are constitutionally servants. So similar principles apply in how we give service to others.
Because actions done in the mode of goodness are better than those done in the lower modes of passion and ignorance, they can be evaluated as ‘higher’, but they aren’t the highest. They are the among the highest on the spectrum of material activities, but there is a higher level that transcends them.
That is revealed by Krishna to be giving our life and everything we possess, in devotional service to Him. That irks some people. They would rather serve humanity than God. Or they conflate serving man with serving God. On the surface it seems noble and worthy, but nothing very significant is happening……..in the long run. It’s like watering the leaves of a tree instead of the roots. If Krishna is served nicely by everyone then everyone benefits because Krishna can adjust things at the root level so that all the ‘leaves’ receive nourishment.
If we ignore that we are eternal beings cycling through birth after birth in the material world then it’s easy to see giving some temporary relief in one life as significant, and if a person doesn’t know better then it’s good. But it’s not as good as freeing a person from the cycle of birth and death. Giving that, along with Krishna prema are the highest expressions of human existence.
Sri Krishna advises:
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform—do that, O son of Kunti, as an offering to Me. Bhagavad Gita 9.27
