What is Midya according to Vedanta, "Brahma satyam jagat midhya"?
It means that Brahman is truth and this universe is not. Although the universe exists, it is temporarily manifest so it is not eternally existing, therefore although it has its own reality it’s not ultimate reality. Ultimate reality or truth is eternally manifest.
What is midhya (or mithya) is thinking the universe to be ultimate reality. That is the illusion and so false. It doesn’t mean that this universe doesn’t exist, obviously it does. But mistaking this universe as ultimate truth is a false conception.
Both ropes and snakes exist but thinking one to be the other in dim light is a mistake or an illusion. It’s a false concept and can have serious consequences if the ‘rope’ suddenly bites you.
