If life has no ultimate meaning, why should anything we do (good and evil) matter?
Objectively it shouldn’t. If life has no ultimate meaning then good and evil don’t even exist - objectively.
Nature assigns no values to anything, a rock, a lump of gold or a human being are the same, just collections of matter. It’s humans who give values to things.
But, humans can’t live without meaning, so even though some claim life has no ultimate meaning, they search for, discover, or create meaning. Somehow or other some meaning must be squeezed out from something that doesn’t have any. So they choose from a supermarket of potential meaningful things, already created by others. They don’t retire to a workshop and literally create meaning.
Because the majority of the population doesn’t believe life has no ultimate meaning, the ‘no meaning’ people slip in with them, borrow meaning from them, and live as if there is meaning. They don’t care that it’s subjective meaning, which means it’s not actual reality. They embrace the subjective meaning as if it were real and in so doing create a subjective reality.
Unfortunately reality cannot be subjective because then anything can be real, bound only by a person’s imagination, which makes the concept of reality redundant because reality is supposed to mean what is real, independent of human minds.
Because a meaningless life is awkward, it’s only brought out strategically when there is talk of design and intent behind the universe and life. Then it’s affirmed, and people give great meaning to explaining how life is meaningless. It’s weird, but I’m not making it up. Then it’s shelved again and the ‘no meaners’ get busy with their illusion of reality as if it were real and enthusiastically endorse what they believe to be good and abhor what they believe to be evil as if it actually mattered when objectively it doesn’t.
A person can genuinely believe something is meaningful, recognize the consequences are meaningful, but ultimately they can’t be, if life has no ultimate meaning.
