If the afterlife exists, do you think it would be a continuation of this life or something entirely different?
According to Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita, life continues but with a different identity based on our bodies. Ie reincarnation as the same ‘spark of life’ but with a different dress and identity.
It can be a bit different because there are millions of species of life available to take birth in. But we will continue to eat, sleep, mate and defend, so it’s not entirely different.
We may be in ‘heavenly’ circumstances or ‘hellish’ ones but our essential ‘self’ is the same person only with different concepts of ourself based on the body.
If we manage to escape this world and return to the spiritual world then things are very different. In that realm there is no birth or death, no suffering, and the laws that control the material universe don’t apply. The concepts of time and space are different and the limitations of a physical body don’t exist.
So if something entirely different sounds attractive then the game is on to return to Krishna’s abode by surrendering to Him and giving up our attachment to controlling and enjoying separately from Him. In Krishna’s abode everything is about Him. Everything is coordinated around pleasing Him, and for His part Krishna reciprocates with everyone perfectly according to their desires. Once there is a paradigm shift from us being important as independent living beings to us being important as servants of Krishna, the path back to the spiritual world opens up.
These are some of the basic points mentioned by Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita.
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones. Bg 2.22
From the highest planet in the material world down to the lowest, all are places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place. But one who attains to My abode, O son of Kunti, never takes birth again. Bg 8.16
But those who worship Me, giving up all their activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, having fixed their minds upon Me, O son of Prtha—for them I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death. Bg 12.6–7
