How do I cultivate devotion or "bhakti" towards God?
By associating with others who are cultivating Bhakti and have had more success than us.
They can guide us, answer questions, identify mistakes and offenses, and generally help us stay focused, determined, enthusiastic, and clear-headed in our attempts.
To get the most benefit from devotees more advanced than us the time-tested method is to be humble and offer to serve them in some way. Cultivating our devotional service to Krishna begins with cultivating our service to His devotees.
My dear King Rahugana, unless one has the opportunity to smear his entire body with the dust of the lotus feet of great devotees, one cannot realize the Absolute Truth. One cannot realize the Absolute Truth simply by observing celibacy [brahmacarya], strictly following the rules and regulations of householder life, leaving home as a vanaprastha, accepting sannyasa, or undergoing severe penances in winter by keeping oneself submerged in water or surrounding oneself in summer by fire and the scorching heat of the sun. There are many other processes to understand the Absolute Truth, but the Absolute Truth is only revealed to one who has attained the mercy of a great devotee. Srimad Bhagavatam 5.12.12
”By the mercy of Krishna and by the association of devotees, one increases his attraction to and intelligence for pure devotional service; therefore one gives up everything and engages himself at the lotus feet of Krishna and His pure devotees. CC Madhya 24.189
Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the devotees of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Simply by the causeless mercy of the devotees engaged in licking honey from His lotus feet, even a fallen soul becomes eternally liberated. CC Antya 7.1
